ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Percussionist Emil Kuyumcuyan (b.1993) grew up in Istanbul-Taksim. He has Armenian, Greek, African and Croatian roots. He is artistically oriented in many ways: improvising, composing and collaborating with other art forms such as dance, puppet theater, and video are all part of Emil’s repertoire.
His musical activities are wide-ranging. They include musical masterpieces of the percussion and chamber music world, as well as jazz, new music, original compositions and music theater.
He performs worldwide as a solo percussionist and chamber musician in various formations. He has appeared at festivals such as the Festival Musica Strasbourg, the Venice Biennale, the Donaueschingen Festival and the Musical Olympus Festival in Saint Petersburg. He also played with the Asko Schönberg Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, and the Stuttgart Percussion Ensemble.
Emil Kuyumcuyan has received various scholarships from the Yamaha Foundation Europe and the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. He was awarded the Germany Scholarship and the DAAD Prize.
He has also successfully participated in international competitions. Among other things, he won the 3rd prize in the “International Percussion Competition Luxembourg” (2012) with his trio and the first prize of the “Stockholm International Music Competition” in the solo Instruments category (2014).
In 2016 Emil Kuyumcuyan won the first prize in one of the most prestigious competitions for solo percussion: “Tromp International Percussion Competition”.
He has given master classes internationally and shares his artistic experience worldwide.
After his musical education with Turgut Mehmet Sökmen at the State Conservatory in Istanbul ” Mimar Sinan” Emil Kuyumcuyan continued his studies at the State Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Marta Klimasara, Klaus Dreher, Jürgen Spitschka and Harald Löhle and at the CNSMD Lyon with Jean Geoffroy and Henri-Charles Caget.
He is currently preparing his first audiovisual show ” I S T A N B U L | the roots”.
