Brady Harrison and Andy Thierauf
Brady Harrison’s eclectic career blends performance and teaching. He is Head of Percussion Studies at Xavier University’s School of Arts and Innovation in Cincinnati, OH and teaches additionally for the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department. Mr. Harrison is Principal Timpanist of the Lexington Philharmonic, Percussionist with the Louisville Orchestra, and has also served as Principal Percussion for four seasons with the Lyrique en Mer Festival in Belle Ile, France. His strong interest in new works and chamber music have led to collaborations with many composers, including John Luther Adams and George Crumb. He has performed across the U S, Europe, and India as a soloist, orchestral musician, and with his flute and percussion chamber duo, Psonic Union. He can be heard on the Telarc label, Mode Records, and Vienna Modern Masters label. Mr. Harrison is sponsored by Sabian Cymbals, Innovative Percussion Sticks and Mallets, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
Andy Thierauf is a Philadelphia based percussionist who specializes in the creation and performance of contemporary music. He is particularly interested in combining percussion with theater, dance, and technology. Andy teaches at Settlement Music School and is an adjunct professor of percussion at Kutztown University.
He has appeared in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Argentina, and across the Midwest at music festivals, conferences, and symposiums. Andy has performed at SEAMUS and PASIC on several occasions and is a member of the PAS Music Technology Committee. His creative research centers on seamlessly integrating technology into performance to produce collaborative, multi-media presentations with writers, dancers, actors, choreographers, and composers. In 2016 he self-published a collection of works for solo percussion and live electronics titled The Post Modern Percussionist.
Andy is half of stb x at, a dance/percussion duo with dancer and choreographer Sean Thomas Boyt. The ensemble has performed at various universities, art galleries, and non-traditional venues across the Midwest and East coast.
In 2012, Andy was featured as the dancing percussion soloist for a commemorative video recording of Paul Elwood’s Edgard Varése in the Gobi Desert. His collaborative work, Growing Fast in Sawdust, was featured at the 2013 PASIC Technology Day that featured his original composition and video by Sean Thomas Boyt. He continues to produce collaborative performances with various artists, and also organized and curated iHearIC, a concert series in Iowa City that features local performance artists. Andy has premiered many new works for percussion and has worked with composers such as Will Huff, Zach Zubow, David Gompper, and Paul Elwood.
Andy received the D.M.A. degree in percussion performance and pedagogy at The University of Iowa under the direction of Dan Moore. He has performed with the Dan Moore Percussion Group in the US and at the 2012 Patagonia International Percussion Festival in Argentina. He is a private percussion teacher and a clinician/performer for the Yamaha Sounds of Summer Percussion Camp at The University of Iowa.
A native of Cincinnati, OH, Andy received his B.M. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and M.M. from The Ohio State University. He has studied percussion with Rusty Burge, Jim Culley, Allen Otte, Susan Powell and Joe Krygier, and composition with Tom Wells, Marc Ainger, Larry Fritts, and David Gompper.
Xavier University Percussion Ensemble
The Xavier University Percussion Ensemble is an instrumental group dedicated to performing works from a diversity of styles and composers. In addition to playing standard repertoire of the percussion ensemble genre, there is a special interest in new works written specifically for percussion as well as classical, popular, and other ethnically or culturally influenced music adapted for percussion ensemble.
The XU Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Brady Harrison and is inclusive of all ability levels and majors at Xavier. All are welcome!
